This time of year things begin to wind down for us in the garden. We can sit back and enjoy the cool days of fall as the days get shorter. Our garden is ablaze with golden hued solidago and rust colored sedum. The ornamental grasses are blooming and the mums and pumpkins are on the front porch.

    We're ready for fall!

Hope you enjoy this issue! :)

Article: Quick Trips and Fun Places

Alfred and I have been able to do some traveling lately to some new spots that are within a days drive of Nashville.

Our first stop located in Cartersville, Georgia, is awesome for both adults and children. Tellus Museum, between Nashville and Atlanta, has a planetarium, wonderful rock collection, and hands on activities for kids.

It's worth the 1 1/2 hour drive to see it. Visit their website for more information http://www.weinmanmuseum.org/

I have also recently visited the Carnton Plantation located in Franklin, Tn. If you haven't been, be sure and take time to visit, especially if you are a Civil War enthusiast.

At Carnton, I especially enjoyed visiting the gardens for a glimpse of a historical garden.

Click here for more information on Carnton Plantation and for a virtual tour of the garden.

Cheekwood Botanical Gardens is the place to be this week-end if you love roses. The Nashville Rose Society will be hosting a rose gardening seminar in the Potter Room on Sunday at 1:30 for free. It is open to the public. There is a gate fee for non-members.

Check out Cheekwood's calender of events here.

Fall is the perfect time to plant roses because they have time to establish their roots before winter giving them a good start for the spring.

    Cool Tools: Wheel Hoe

Here's a really neat tool that our friend Mike told us about. It's often called a "wheel hoe" and it's reported to do a great job.

Check it out on YouTube here.

    Garden Calender

    • Divide and transplant spring or summer flowering perennials (except hostas and ornamental grasses).
    • Have all your herb cuttings done soon of any herbs you want to bring inside for the winter.
    • Learn to make potpourri with the extra harvest.
    • Water new divisions weekly for three weeks until roots are established.
    • Walk the garden and find empty spots for new plants. Record your observations in a journal.
    • Add thin layer of fresh mulch to spruce up for fall if desired.
    • Continue pinching and pruning off all dead flowers so plants can put it's energy to producing deep roots
    • Had your soil tested recently? If not, do that now and add amendments to get it ready for next spring
    • Prune only dead or injured wood from shrubs
    • Take ten minutes a day to keep weeds under control
