This is a big week in the world of gardening. We have Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, and Arbor Day which will be celebrated on Saturday, April 25th.

Lots of communities around the country will be having many celebrations to recognize these special days.

If you needed an excuse to get outside, besides enjoying the beautiful weather, perhaps planting trees, bushes, and flowers that attract wildlife is the answer.

In this issue, you will learn more about creating your own wildlife habitat.

We hope you enjoy this issue!

Article: Create Your Own Wildlife Habitat

We have had an exciting month here in the Stewart garden. Beside becoming beekeepers (more about this in our next issue), our yard has become a Certified Wildlife Habitat from the National Wildlife Habitat Federation. This simply means that we have provided the essential elements for the wildlife in our garden in the way of: bushes with berries, flowers for butterfly's and birds, water sources, places to raise young, and a sustainable landscape for all kinds critters.

It's easy to get started and to apply online by going to the

National Wildlife Habitat website. Here you can sign up for Ranger Rick Magazine for kids, find out more about the Great American Backyard Campout, Wildlife Watch, and more.

If you have kids and want to learn more about gardening with them and what you can expect from them at different ages, check out our page gardening with kids

We love wildlife in our garden as much as you do, but we must draw the line at letting deer treat our yard as a smorgasbord each night. Gardening for wildlife includes living harmoniously with deer (as much as possible.)

Learn more about gardening with deer. What plants we have used that work.

Learn about drought tolerant annuals too.

    Garden Calender

    • Put down pre-emergence
    • Spray caterpillars
    • Plant your raised beds
    • Wait until it's warmer before you plant basil. If you need a sweeter outside, it's too cold for them!
    • Check bluebird houses and don't let sparrows build their nest on top of the bluebird!
