While I have been out decorating for the holidays at different functions, many people have asked me whether or not certain plants usually used in Christmas decorations are poisonous. After some research, here is what I found.

Mistletoe, holly, and pyrancantha are toxic if ingested; these plants can cause severe stomach cramps and diarrhea, and even can be fatal. If you suspect that your child or pet has consumed any of these plants, immediately call your poison control center.

Poinsettias A research study conducted at Ohio State University in more recent years reveals that poinsettias are not truly poisonous at all. The study conclusively proved that all parts of the plant are non-toxic but consuming large amounts of the plant can cause cramping and diarrhea.

As Alan Windham with the UT Extension service said when I confirmed this with him... "these plants are considered poisonous, however, almost every ornamental plant that we grow could be considered poisonous. Almost none are grown for edible properties or consumption. Youpon holly was named Ilex vomitoriea for a reason." He further states that "if used as intended, there is practically no risk or danger, and all three plants should be enjoyed this Christmas season."
