Planting trees, pruning hedges, mulching, and working on drainage seem to be the task at hand during the winter. We've made a new video for you on what we have been doing in the garden lately.

See for yourself on our "winter gardening" page.

We hope you enjoy this issue!

    Article: Winter Gardening

You may think there is nothing much to do in the garden during the winter months, but actually this is the best time to be working on the "bones" of your garden. By that I mean planting trees, hedges, and shrubs; building arbors, patios, and walkways; and even adding rock walls and ponds.

These are the things that add interest and dimension to your garden all year long. In our yard, we have added evergreens that create "rooms" in the garden. By doing this, you invite visitors to go around the corner to see what surprise might await them there. We've also added arbors and benches so that once they get to the next "room, they can sit and enjoy it for awhile with a nice cold glass of tea.

Also in February, it's a good time to try out an organic herbicide. Just sprinkle a little corn gluten meal around your garden to naturally prevent annual weeds from growing from seed. We have heard good reports about the effectiveness of corn gluten to both fertilize your plants and to prevent weeds from coming up in the spring.

Read more about using corn gluten meal here.

If you can't find it at your local garden center or co-op, one company that we recommend is Gardens Alive
