When we hear the frogs chirping, see the bluebirds building their nest and a glorious array of daffodils blooming, we know spring isn't far behind.

Saturday, March 20th, rang in the first day of spring with all it's glory. It was a perfect beautiful day here in the Mid South. I hope you had a great first day of spring too.

Hope you enjoy this issue! :)

Article: Spring is here, now what do I do in my garden?

My husband Alfred and I were able to be outside all day (a plant nerds dream come true!) cleaning up the garden and tilling in worm castings in my herb and vegetable garden with our handy Mantis tiller.

Now is the time to be planning your garden. If you are wanting to put in a vegetable garden, Check out this great interactive tool at GrowVeg.com founder Jeremy Dore has produced to help you design your veggie garden.

With just a click of a mouse, you can have a design to print out with spacing of your veggies already added. Learn about companion planting, have growing and harvesting reminders emailed to you and tons more.

check out my interview with him which explains the whole thing.

And,if you are doing raised beds or square foot gardening, there is also a similar interactive tool for that too at www.gardenerssupply.com. Simply click on the Kitchen Garden Planner to access it.

Both of these interactive tools are really fun to use and takes much of the drudgery out of planning your garden.

Another way to take the drudgery out of planning your garden is to get a professional landscape designer to plan your garden for you. With free consultations, it's a no brainier. Designers can save you time and money by suggesting plants that do well in your area.

We highly recommend Lois Mancuso at our own Greathouse Landscape Co here in Nashville, Tn. Call 615-350-8030 today and talk to Lois.

    • Daffodils need the spent brown leaves after they bloom to absorb energy to bloom next year. Plant other perennials around them to hide the ugly foliage instead of cutting them back.

    • Amend your soil with worm casting or other high quality compost

    • Prune back lavender, sage and thyme anytime in March to keep them compact and healthy.

    • Put out cool weather veggies like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and onions now.

    • Aerate and dethatch your lawn if you haven't' done it in a few years. Get your pre-emergence down now to eliminate weeds, especially crabgrass-ugh.

    • Remove dead leaves, twigs, and any debris from flower beds. Remove extra mulch from crowns of plants

    • Fertilize perennials lightly when you start to see new growth
