It's a little bit hard to think of gardening in the winter for some of us. Especially those of us in the Mid-South who are looking out right now onto a winter wonderland. It's definitely the biggest snow we've seen in years. Anywhere from 4 to 6 inches depending on where you live.

Although the snow is deep outside, Alfred and I have actually been gardening! Read below about how you can garden, even in the winter, using Mel Bartholomew's Square Foot Gardening method.

Hope you enjoy this issue! :)

    Article: Square Foot Gardening
If you are a new gardener, or even if you are an expert, you may like to consider square foot gardening for it's simplicity and for the ability to garden all year long, even in the winter!
With this system, you can produce 100% of the produce with only 20% of the space. Better yet, there's no tilling, no pulling weeds, no heavy lifting, no fertilizing and it conserves water.
I've seen this book at book stores for years, but I just couldn't believe it would work.

This winter, Alfred and I read Mel's book All New Square Foot Gardening and it changed our lives forever.

In a few weeks, we will be taking this method of growing veggies up to families of Appalachia where we have done missions work the past five years with our church.

We've helped rebuild houses in the past, now, Lord willing, we will be adding a new aspect to our projects by teaching the women and children how to grow their own fresh vegetables using the square foot gardening method.

We are very excited about this.

    Seed Sources
This is the time of year where you can sip a cup of hot tea and dream about having a perfect garden while you pour over all the gardening catalogs you are getting in the mail.

The one problem many of us make, especially first time gardeners, is ordering too many seeds and getting too carried away with our enthusiasm. All the pictures in the catalog look great, and I can hear you thinking right now.."Wouldn't it be fun to grow peanuts?" To that I say "Yes, it would!", but just be realistic about how much time and energy you want to put into the garden.

    Find recommended seed sources here.
