Native Orchids Growing in Tennessee?

by Carolyn Kirchner
(Franklin, TN, USA)

Grass Pink Native Orchid

Grass Pink Native Orchid

This past fall I attended Conservation Camp sponsored by the Federation of Tennessee Garden Clubs and heard a speaker talk of native orchids. I was certainly under the impression that orchids grew naturally in the orient or jungle or some other exotic places, not right here in Tennessee. He piqued my interest and I used one of his resources to buy a Grass Pink Native Orchid and two Fragrant Nodding Ladies' Tresses Orchids. I planted the tiny bulb-like plants (showing only a bit of green sprouting) and was rewarded with a beautiful Grass Pink orchid in spring (see attached picture). This miniature bloom is only about 1 1/2" tall. I will be waiting patiently for fall to arrive which is when the Ladies' Tresses will hopefully bloom for me.

Native Orchids in TN
by: CF Young of TX

We have a species that grows in our Big Thicket National Park here is Southeast Texas also. I am not lucky enough to have one of my own for my yard. Carolyn Kirchner's of TN is gorgeous. Carolyn has a green thumb, I know because I am her friend and have know her for many years.

Better informed now about the Native Orchid
by: Judy McGee

In response to Carolyn Kirchner's article ... I'm always amazed at the information given by regular people who like plants,as I do. The difference being,is they join the clubs which further enhance "their" knowledge and proceed to share "their" artistry of what beauty they have found in the joy of "digging in the dirt" and thus, with great pride, reap their reward as they look about their garden and see the wonderment that nature alone can exhibit in all it's beauty. We "fellow gardeners" applaude those who share in the attempt to turn "ordinary dirt" into a bouquet of sheer joy around us.
