The Potager Herb Garden

raised-bed.jpg

The potager herb garden is a garden that the colonists had in their back yard. They grew all that they needed to sustain their lives in this one garden.

I have always been fascinated with the crafts of colonial times. The blacksmiths, basket weavers, the ladies making soap, candles, herbal sachets, and quilts for their homes.

Herbs don't require great soil or attention, except a snip here and there, and they can be used for so many different things

I love the thought of taking something that you have grown in your garden and using it in your home. The potager garden allows you to do just that. It is a French method of combining both edible and non-edible flowers, herbs, berries, and fruiting trees into one garden.

Historically, potagers can be designed as a cottage garden or a knot garden.

These plants can be used as food, cut flowers, and herbs. It is a way to arrange a garden that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

When we designed our garden, we divided the four plots into herbs and plants that are used for sachets and potpourri, those that are used for tea, those that are used as medicinal herbs, and those used as culinary herbs.
