Shade Loving Perennials For the Mid South

In order to have successful shade loving perennials in your garden, you must first analyze your site.

Do you have dry soil and shade, or moist soil and partial shade?

If you think that you can't grow anything because you have too much shade in you yard, think again!

Have you taken a walk in the woods lately?

There are many varieties of plants growing there under the big trees without any special care.

Here are a few things to consider before deciding what to plant in your shady area.

  • Some of the best perennials love the shade
  • Plants that are technically full-sun perennials may like some shade in the afternoon in the Deep South.
  • Tree roots with surface feeder roots, such as maples, sweet gums, and dogwoods, can steal moisture and nutrients from the plants. The plants listed under "perennials for dry soil and shade' below will work well in this area. You may need to incorporate organic matter into the soil before planting
  • Plants like hostas, hellebores, ferns, vines, annuals, and shrubs also like shade and are not listed here.

Shade Perennials For Dry Soil and Shade: Match these perennials to your site as much as possible.
