Soap Making and other Gifts From Your Garden
Soap making and other gifts from your garden, I believe, can be the greatest gifts you can give to friends and loved ones. It shows that you spent time and effort into what you would give them, and the gift is always so much more personal than a store bought one. Transforming a simple herb into a fabulous gift is half the fun of giving gifts from your garden. I especially enjoy soap making and growing and crafting with herbs. Whether you garden or not, you can enjoy the wonderful smells, tastes, and benefits of crafting with herbs. Being knowledgeable about herbs and herbal remedies was quiet a gift a long time ago. People who knew how to concoct teas, tinctures, ointments, poultices, and other remedies were sought after for their healing powers. In the 16th Century, the Great Age of Herbals took place in Europe. There were many books and references written on herbs and their uses. The early herbalists were the predecessors of modern botanists and physicians. Today, a hugh amount of information is available. On this page you will find some of my favorite herbal recipes for soap making and other crafts. If you need to know more about harvesting and preserving herbs and everlasting flowers

Simply pour 1/4 cup boiling water over 1 Tablespoon pulverized herbs such as chamomile or lavender flowers, leaves of peppermint, rosemary, sage, thyme, or a combination of the last five. Add 5 or 6 drops of a related essential oil, if desired, for a stronger scent. Steep for 15 minutes. Reheat until bubbly and pour over 2 cups shredded Ivory soap (one "personal size" bar.) Mix well with hands and let stand 15 minutes. Mix again and divide into 3 or 6 parts, rolling each into a ball. Place on plastic wrap and dry for 3 days.
