Victory Gardens Revived
There has been a revival of victory gardens in our country. Sometimes called 'war gardens," "recession gardens," "community gardens," and even "money gardens" Even our nations capital has gotten involved by planting their own garden. There has been such a revival with vegetable gardening, that Burgess Seed & Plant Co. and other seed companies have reported that they are actually running out of seeds. Co-ops around the country are also having a hard time keeping up with demand. This past week-end, my husband and I went to three different co-ops in our area looking for seed potatoes and all three co-ops were out. Our advice is if you are thinking of starting your own victory garden, don't delay in getting your seeds and plants...they may not be there when you want them. Just like the original victory gardens which helped supply our nation with not only extra needed food during WWI and WWII, but also boosted the morale of our nation when growers felt good about their contribution of labor and were rewarded by good healthy produce. Today, homeowners are once again feeling empowered by the revival of the victory garden movement and want to feel good about what they are feeding their own families and at the same time save money, get great exercise, and help the environment. It's definitely a win-win situation all the way around. Before you start your own garden, be sure to consider the cost, time, variety of vegetables, herbs and fruits you like and will grow well in your area, and where you will put your garden. If you live in an apartment, don't have enough sun, or not enough space for a garden, consider planting vegetables in your window boxes, in a special planter on your deck. one of the best resources we have found is the
The Mittleider method of container gardening
in mini grow boxes. This method blends the best features of several major methods of gardening, including organic, conventional, and hydroponic into one simple, highly efficient, and enjoyable gardening experience from the world-renowned Dr. Jacob R Mittleider. You can even plant some vegetables among your annuals and perennials in your existing landscape, or ask a neighbor who has some unused garden space if you can use their land and share the bounty with him. If all that fails, check to see if there are any community gardens available in you area. You may even decide to start your own community garden at your local church like we did at
Christ Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee
Growing your own food has so many advantages for you and your family such as great exercise, fresh food, self-reliance, saving money, and health improvement for you and ultimately the nation, that hopefully more and more people will get "going" on "growing."
